Folk Club

The Star Inn Folk Club has been going in its present format for 10 years or so, after its revival by Mick Smith. It attracts poets and singers from up and down the Greater Manchester area and beyond, and remains a platform for differing performers each first Wednesday of the month. Using the money collected from name cards, it affords a named guest every 6 months.

The most pleasing thing about the folk session is the open policy, which sees a different set of performers each month. It’s also free, has quality ale, and is acoustic in nature. Come down for a session that is fun and always unique in this ‘hidden gem’ of a community owned and run pub in the back streets of Salford!

Poem

One of the Folk Club regulars, Marie Leonard, has written a poem about the Star Inn that we are pleased to be able to share here.

Have you ever been to the Star Inn in Salford?
It’s a community owned pub
Full of friendly people, it’s a buzzing little hub
It’s off the beaten track but on the northern CAMRA Trail
It’s warm and got WiFi so you can check your mail
Full of interesting people, the Hairy Bikers and the like
Down a back entry so you can park your bike

We won a grant for the garden from the R.H.S.
We submitted our application and they gave us a big yes
With outside tables and covered seating too
It’s even got a toilet outside where you can have a pooh
First Wednesday of every month folk night,
spoken word and song
Better get there early
coz the seats don’t last for long

Sometimes there’s live music, DJs and bands
A famous Doctor (Who) Christopher Eccleston used our toilets once
and didn’t wash his hands

It’s one of the oldest pubs in Salford
and could tell a few tales
We sell a great pint of Guinness
and somecracking guest ales

Marie Leonard
